Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has issued a sharp warning to Senator Ajibola Basiru, urging him to refrain from commenting on Rivers State politics amid rising tensions in the region.

Ejes Gist News reports that the warning followed remarks made by Senator Basiru in support of Governor Sim Fubara, which Wike criticized during a public address to his supporters in Oyigbo Local Government Area.

Wike’s Warning to Senator Basiru

Addressing the gathering, Wike emphasized the need for caution in political statements regarding Rivers State, saying:

“Don’t take our support for President Tinubu for granted. You have to be very careful with the statements you make.

“When Mr. President comes back, when I see the Minister of Blue Economy, I will tell them to tell him: Carry your hand to Rivers State if your hand burns, don’t say na me burn am. I can challenge anybody; this state is a no-go area.

“Go and ask those who have tried it before. You open your mouth to talk about Rivers State, anything you see, take it. Anything you want, take it. I can challenge anybody that this state is a no-go area. This state is a no-go area whether you like it or don’t like it. So take the one you have taken. Stop making unnecessary noise.”

The statement comes amid heightened political activity in Rivers State, where local support for key national figures, including President Tinubu, has been a focal point of contention. Wike’s intervention underscores his influence and control within the state and signals his intent to monitor and challenge external political commentary.

Implications for Rivers Politics

Political analysts note that Wike’s warning reinforces the territorial nature of state-level politics in Nigeria, particularly in regions with influential political leaders. The comments suggest potential friction between federal figures aligned with APC and state leadership loyal to Wike.
