Catholic Bishops Ban Father Ejike Mbaka

The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, CBCN, has explained why Ejike Mbakawas, a well-known Catholic priest, is prohibited from making political statements.

Mbaka is the Spiritual Director of Adoration Ministries, AMEN, in Enugu, Nigeria.

The fiery priest was ordered by the Bishops to stop using his position to promote what appeared to be partisan politics.

President of the conference and Archbishop of Benin Catholic Archdiocese, Most Rev. Augustine Akubeze, said it was not the church’s practice to identify unelected leaders through prophetic visions, dreams, or revelation during his address at the opening mass of the ongoing second CBCN plenary in Enugu.

“Anyone who declares a candidate to be God’s anointed political leader is not speaking on behalf of the church.

“We would like to state that the church is concerned about Nigeria’s political situation. Even though the church does not endorse any political party, it applauds any government that prioritises the welfare of its citizens.

”At the same time, the church opposes any government policy that is not in the best interests of the people.

“We must emphasise once more that no cleric is expected to use his or her position or ecclesiastical property to promote partisan politics. Political parties, according to the church, have people who can lead.

“As a result, clerics must avoid any form of political endorsement using the ecclesiastical positions bestowed upon them. “At the same time, it is not the church’s practice to identify unelected leaders through prophetic visions, dreams, or revelation,” he added.

Fr Mbaka was banned from commenting on partisan politics by the Catholic Church in June.

The Catholic Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Most Rev. Callistus Onaga, announced the conversion of the Adoration Ministry to a chaplaincy in a letter to the cleric, which means the bishop now has the authority to appoint a chaplain to oversee its operations.
