WAEC Result 2020 October /November •

On Monday, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) announced that 39.82 percent made credits for private candidates for 2020 in five subjects (including Mathematics and English) in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) (second series).

Patrick Areghan, head of the National Office, also announced the opening of registration three months behind schedule for the 2021 WASSCE for school candidates.

Announcing the release of the WASSCE for private candidates in 2020, Areghan said the result was an improvement in examination performance over the past two years.

In at least five (5) subjects, including English Language and Mathematics, Twenty Four Thousand Four Hundred and Ninety One (24,491) candidates representing 39.82 percent received credit and above.’

Twelve thousand, and forty (12,040) out of this number, i. i. e. 49.16% were male candidates, while Twelve Thousand, Four Hundred and Fifty One (12,451) were female candidates, i.e. 50.84 percent.

In the WASSCE for Private Candidates, 2018 and 2019, the percentage of candidates in this category, that is, those who obtained credit and above in at least five (5) subjects, including English Language and Mathematics, were 35.99 percent and 35.10 percent, respectively.’ There is, therefore, a marginal 4.72 percent increase in performance in this regard,” he said.

However, Areghan warned that performance should not be the basis for judging how well candidates did in the examination, as candidates seeking to make certain subjects are considered a remedial one.

Of the 61,509 candidates who took the examination, 5,548 (9.02 percent) were denied their results due to alleged involvement in malpractice testing.

He also explained that the 66,375 candidates registered for the examination, which he said was due to COVID-19, represented a 31.63 per cent decline in enrolment for the examination.

Speaking about why the registration for school candidates for the 2021 WASSCE has just opened, Areghan attributed the delay to the COVID-19 pandemic disruption.

We usually close earlier than now, but a lot of disruption has taken place due to the challenges of the education system. The third term is still run by some schools. They haven’t got any SS3. So we had to take time to allow things to stabilise a bit because of this. We are going to roll out materials today; schools are going to collect them. They will have candidates enrolled. And the examination date will be announced later,’ he said.

The COVID-19 pandemic also affected the behaviour of the WASSCE for school candidates last year, with SS3 students writing the test in August, about five months behind schedule.
