Following the death of the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) President, Sheikh Khalifa, the Ministry of Presidential Affairs has declared 40 days of mourning, Ejes Gist Newspaper reports.
Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahyan, the late President of the UAE and one of the world’s wealthiest monarchs, died at the age of 73.

Work in the public and business sectors has been suspended for the first three days, with flags lowered to half-mast.

Sheikh Khalifa, who was also the ruler of Abu Dhabi, the oil-rich capital of the UAE‘s seven emirates, became the UAE’s second President in November 2004, succeeding his father as Abu Dhabi’s 16th ruler.
His function has been mostly ceremonial since he suffered a stroke in 2014, according to sources, following which he was rarely seen in public.

His half-brother, Mohamed bin Zayed al-Nahyan, is said to be in command of state affairs.

In accordance with the UAE Constitution, the ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, will serve as Interim President.
As a result of the latest event, the federal council, which consists of the rulers of the seven emirates, will be required to meet within 30 days to nominate a new President.
