Photos : Truck with Ammunition Falls in Anambra

Onitsha, Anambra State, was hit by a truck loaded with ammunition on Sunday.

According to reports, live animals littered the road as soon as the truck crashed into a ditch and spilled its contents.

The truck driver was reportedly detained by police, while his conductor managed to escape.

“The incident happened on the Awka Road,” a source said. Those who went to church early in the morning discovered it. The road has seen a significant increase in security presence.

“The driver of the truck, a Mercedes Benz 911 model, lost control and crashed into a gutter while transporting goods out of Onitsha.”

According to another source, the truck crashed around 5 a.m.

“The driver and his companions attempted to clear the contents of the truck as soon as possible, but they were unable to do so before daybreak, when police officers arrived on the scene and discovered that the truck was carrying live bullets.

“The officers requested backup and detained the truck driver, but his conductor managed to flee,” he said.

“I have not been informed about the incident,” said Ikeng Tochukwu, the state Police Public Relations Officer. I’ll contact you as soon as I have more information.”

The army, however, had come to the state police command to take the ammunition, according to a top security official.

“I learned a tipper was brought in by the army and the live bullets were taken away,” the source said..
