EjesGist Newspaper confirms that man dies in Benin, Edo State while registering for Free medical care.
Yesterday, during registering for free medical care, an anonymous middle-aged man reportedly fell into a soakaway and died at Oredo Primary Health Centre in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State.
The state government, in partnership with the Association of Nigerian Physicians in the United States of America, is providing free medical care to inhabitants of the state.
When the tragedy occurred, the middle-aged man abandoned the long line during the free registration exercise to ease himself within the premises.
He was alleged to have trodden on a soakaway on the grounds by accident and slipped into it, drowning in the process.
Meanwhile, there was also no warning sign near the dilapidated soakaway, which was overgrown with grasses, according to the report.
The incident prompted temporary panic among health staff and people waiting to be registered, who cried hysterically.
The victim was also taken out of the soakaway dead with the help of an excavator brought to the scene by the emergency response team, which arrived four hours later.
After the tragedy, registration for free medical care was temporarily suspended, according to a visit to the Oredo Primary Health Centre.
Prof. Akoria Obehi, the state Commissioner for Health, was unavailable for comment, while Mr. Kotongs Bello, the spokesman for the Nigeria Police, Edo State Command, did not return his calls.
