Grammy Awards 2021 : Did Tiwa Savage, Femi and Made Kuti Win?

Tiwa Savage 2021

Burna Boy and Wizkid each won an award at the Grammy Awards 2021 for Best Global Music Album and Best Music Video, respectively, and many of their fans were ecstatic.

While the party was going on, social media started circulating reports that Tiwa Savage, Femi, and Made Kuti had also received awards, sparking a lot of debate on social media.

Everyday Life, Coldplay’s 2019 album, features Tiwa Savage, Femi, and Made Kuti. The album was nominated for Album of the Year and Best Record Packing. The Kutis were featured on the incredible album ‘Arabesque,’ where Femi Kuti performed an incredible Trumpet solo and Tiwa Savage worked on ‘Eko.’

The album did, however, win the much-coveted album of the year award, which was given to Taylor Swift’s Folklore.

Tiwa Savage, Femi, and Made Kuti would not have won a Grammy if Coldplay had won. As reported by Vox:

A golden gramophone is awarded to those who contributed to the creation of a significant portion of the album (defined as at least 33% of the total playing time).

In addition, according to the category’s rules:

For albums with new vocal or instrumental recordings accounting for at least 51% of the total playing time. If other than Artist, award to Artist(s) and Featured Artist(s), Songwriter(s) of new material, Producer(s), Recording Engineer(s), Mixer(s), and Mastering Engineer(s) credited with at least 33 percent of the album’s playing time.

Because the three Nigerian artists did not contribute to the creation of 33% of the album, they will only receive Grammy certificates rather than gramophones.

Femi has been nominated for a Grammy Awards   in the world music category four times (in 2003, 2010, 2012, and 2013), but has never won.

Made Kuti, Fela’s grandson and Femi’s son, grew up in Lagos’ New Afrika Shrine, studied at Trinity Laban Conservatoire in London, and has been a member of Femi’s Positive Force band since he was a child.

Tiwa Savage has won a number of awards, including Best African Act at the 2018 MTV Europe Music Awards, making her the first woman to do so.
