Kaduna church attack – Here is how gunmen attacked St. Thomas Catholic Church and Maranatha Baptist Church
“It is God that spared our lives because the third person killed during the attack was close to where my wife hid.”
That is how Timothy Uwar, one of the survivors of the Sunday attack on some churches in Kaduna state, Northwest Nigeria, begins his talk with Ejes Gist Newspaper about what happened.
According to the Kaduna state government, the gunmen attacked St. Thomas Catholic Church and Maranatha Baptist Church in Rubu village inside the Kajuru local government area.

According to Timothy, nine members of Maranatha Baptist Church are missing after the attack.
“Me and my wife woke up around 6AM prepared for church and just like a normal Sunday.” We started service around 8 a.m. and the attack started around 8:30 a.m.
“We started hearing gunshots from all over the village. People started running. I quickly rushed and grabbed my wife and ran outside the church. From there I saw gunmen on top of bikes shooting indiscriminately.”
He started running while his wife was looking for somewhere to hide. From there, he was injured as he fell into a ditch.
“I’m receiving treatment now but we thank God. In fact, the third person close to where my wife hid was shot dead.
The father of five said another saving grace for his family is that their children had been away from the village when the Sunday attack happened.
Many children are still missing, but in my own case, my children were in the village when the attack occurred. I thank God for that.

Timothy said this is the third time gunmen have attacked Rubu village this year, but despite that, he is not planning to relocate.
“Where are we going to? This is where God keeps us. We just pray to God, the government to help increase security for us. ”
Government react to Kaduna church attack
Kaduna state, in a statement released on Sunday after the attack, confirmed that gunmen on motorbikes were involved. According to the Kaduna State Government, those killed were Peter Madaki, Elisha Ezekiel, and Ali Zamani.
The report also said people were missing but didn’t give the total number of people missing. Some shop owners also suffered losses after the gunmen stole from them.
Samuel Aruwan, the commissioner, Ministry of Internal Security and Home Affairs, Kaduna State, said security patrols have commenced around the area as investigations start.
Police reaction to Kaduna church attack
The police public relations officer, Mohammed Jalige, and the state police boss, Yekini Adio Ayoku, also confirmed the incident.
Kaduna state has come under security threat with many bandit attacks in recent times.
Last year, bandits stormed one of the schools in Kaduna and kidnapped many students. Some of the students are still in captivity.
Hadiza Sabuwa Balarabe, the acting governor, has expressed sadness and strongly condemned the attack as she sent her sincere condolences to the families of the victims.
This comes days after terrorists attacked Owo Church Catholic, killing 40 worshipers and injuring over 100 others in Ondo State.
