On Sunday night, July 25, some hoodlums suspected of being cultists attacked Shoprite Mall along Ring Road in Ibadan, killing a recent graduate and injuring many others.
On Monday, July 26, in Ibadan, a witness told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the deceased, identified as Akinola Babatunde, was shot dead by hoodlums at the mall’s entrance gate.
When the miscreants struck, people at the mall began running helter-skelter, according to the witness, resulting in the injuries of an unspecified number of people.
The hoodlums’ attempt to use the opportunity to break the mall’s glass door and loot was unsuccessful, according to the witness.
The quick appearance of security operatives, he said, also prevented the hoodlums from entering the mall.
“I believe those boys were members of a rival cult trying to establish superiority here at the mall,” the witness speculated.
“The incident began around 8:30 p.m. at a club inside the Shoprite, and those hoodlums later pushed their way to the entrance gate, where one person was killed,” a witness said.
Adewale Osifeso, a spokesman for the Oyo State Police Command, confirmed the incident on Monday, saying it was a case of “cult related violence” and that an investigation is underway.
“The incident occurred; comprehensive investigations are underway to apprehend all of the perpetrators; an update will be provided as soon as possible,” Mr Osifeso said.
