Twenty people are said to have died last night in Kano State after a late-night fire engulfed a residential apartment in Gandun Albasa-Bala Barodo, Kano municipal, Ejes Gist Newspaper Reports.

A 35-year-old mother and her three-year-old child were killed in the fire because they were sound asleep when it started.

The incidents were confirmed by the Kano State Fire Service’s Public Relations Officer, Saminu Yusif Abdullahi.

He said the agency received a distress call from Ibrahim Ashiru, who said a five-room bungalow had been completely destroyed.

The victims were rescued unconscious and handed over to Inspector Shehu Lawan of Kwali Police Station, according to Abdullahi.

Doctors on duty at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, however, confirmed the victims were dead upon arrival, according to him.

After over twenty people were burned beyond recognition in a late-night fire at Sheka Karshen Kwalta on Thursday, Abdullahi decried the rising number of fire disasters.

In the Kunchi Local Government Area of the State, he added, twenty sheep and eight grain silos were also set ablaze.

In a related development, some of the victims of a cylinder chemical explosion in Kano State’s Sharada Industrial Quarters area were taken to the hospital on Friday.

The victims inhaled dangerous chemicals from a dismantled cylinder, according to reports, and were rushed to Kano’s Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Sharada Industrial Hospital, and Ja’en Hospital for treatment.

Some of them were said to have suffocated and passed out after inhaling a chemical released into the atmosphere as a result of metal scrappers’ activities.

Nuradeen Abdullahi, the coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in Kano State, confirmed the news.

He stated that the incident took place around 4 p.m.
“A cylinder chemical explosion occurred at Sharada Industrial Area on Friday around 4:00 p.m.

He described the victims as “suffocated and unconscious.”
