On Friday, Abass Olajire, a renowned professor at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, LAUTECH, Ogbomoso, died after slumping.
The Professor of Industrial/Environmental Chemistry, according to university reports, died on Friday during the Juma’at prayer.
According to family sources, the late professor will be buried in Ibadan on Saturday following Islamic tradition.
Olajire is among the world’s top scholars, according to a ranking released by Elsevier B. V. (Netherlands) and a team of researchers led by Stanford University’s Prof. John P.A. Ioannidis.
He was ranked 128th out of 66,925 top scientists in the world in March 2021.
The PUNCH was also informed of the professor’s death by LAUTECH’s Public Relations Officer, Lekan Fadeyi.
“The University Management is devastated by the sudden death of Abass Abiola Olajire, a renowned researcher and erudite Professor of Petroleum Chemistry,” Fadeyi said.

“Acting Vice-Chancellor, LAUTECH, Professor Mojeed Olaide Liasu, who was taken aback by the sad news, said Professor Abass was a shining star in the institution and described his passing as a major blow.
“In preparation for being granted a space in Aljanah Firdaus, he prayed to Almighty Allah to overlook his transgressions and forgive his sins.”
Olajire received the Best Lecturer award in 1994 from the LAUTECH branch of the National Association of Mathematics Students.
