Bayelsa Slot: Jonathan Finally Speaks Out on Attempt to Influence Tinubu’s Ministerial Nominees

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has clarified his position regarding his recent visit to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

He firmly stated that he has not taken any action nor does he have any intention to influence the nomination of a minister from Bayelsa state in Tinubu’s government.

The clarification comes in response to concerns raised by a group known as the All Progressives Congress (APC) Elders Council in Bayelsa state, who alleged that Jonathan was attempting to exert influence over the nomination of a ministerial slot from Bayelsa.

    Goodluck Jonathan Responds to Allegations

Jonathan dismissed these allegations, stating that some politicians in the state may have misunderstood the purpose of his recent visits to the Presidential Villa. According to a statement from his Special Assistant on Media, Mr. Ikechukwu Eze, the visits were aimed at updating President Bola Tinubu, who had been elected as the Chairman of the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government, on recent developments in the sub-region. Jonathan himself holds the position of Chairman of the ECOWAS Council of the Wise.

In light of the misinformation being spread, Jonathan urged Nigerians to disregard what he termed ‘mischief makers’ and the proliferation of fake news, as they pose a threat to the nation’s peace and growth.

    APC Elders Express Opposition

On the other hand, the Bayelsa APC Elders Council expressed their opposition to what they perceived as relentless attempts by former President Goodluck Jonathan to nominate ministers from the state for President Bola Tinubu. The group alleged that Jonathan’s moves to nominate a minister for the state were unwarranted, particularly given his open and active support for Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during the previous presidential election.

My cabinet members feared being jailed by Buhari –  Former President Goodluck Jonathan

Former President Goodluck Jonathan stated that members of his cabinet feared imprisonment when Muhammadu Buhari was elected president in 2015.

Jonathan stated, “In my own time, particularly during the 2015 elections, my ministers, my senior officers, and people who worked with me feared what would happen if we lost the election. Would the new government simply throw us all in jail without a fair trial? Because government is adjacent to the court and can make any decision.”

The former president stated that the “tense atmosphere” his team encountered during the 2015 transition period was not experienced by the outgoing Buhari administration.

Jonathan elaborated on why he conceded defeat to Buhari: “At this point, I have already conceded defeat. And I knew why I conceded defeat: I cared more about the country than about myself.”

Jonathan stated that it is essential for politicians to be more concerned with the nation than with themselves, because without the nation, there would be no president.

According to him, problems persisted despite the transition from a manual to an electronic voting process.

He warned that if the Independent National Electoral Commission did not wake up, it would one day plunge Nigeria into chaos.

When asked how Nigeria’s electoral controversy could be resolved through reforms, he responded, “The problem is INEC and security.” And I used to give the following illustration: if two football teams are competing and the referee decides to turn his back on them, they will injure themselves.

“And you cannot permit it. The electoral management body bears greater than sixty percent of the responsibility. If they do a good job, the politicians will have no choice but to abide by the rules, as will security and the courts.
