The legal battle over whether or not to extradite Sunday Igboho to Nigeria has taken several dramatic turns.

Igboho’s release was confirmed by the Umbrella body of Yoruba Self-determination Groups, Ilana Omo Oodua Worldwide, in a terse statement released on Monday.

Maxwell Adeleye, Ilana Omo Oodua Worldwide’s Communications Secretary, explained that Igboho was given to Professor Banji Akintoye and Professor Wale Adeniran, Ilana Omo Oodua Worldwide’s French Language Expert/Deputy Alana.

The release of Sunday Igboho was described by Akintoye as a “Triumph of Truth over Darkness in Yoruba Land.”

Igboho, who escaped a deadly raid on his Ibadan residence by Department of State Service operatives on July 1, 2021, was arrested on July 19 in Benin Republic on his way to Germany with his wife, Ropo. His wife had already been released.

The Department of State Services arrested and detained 13 of Sunday Igboho’s associates during the bloody raid on his Sooka home. During the raid, two of Igboho’s supporters, identified as Adogan and Alfa, were killed.

Seven AK-47 rifles, three pump-action guns, 30 fully charged AK-47 magazines, 5,000 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, five cutlasses, one jack-knife, one pen knife, two pistol holsters, a pair of binoculars, a wallet containing $5, local and international driving licences in his name, ATM cards, a German residence permit No. YO2N6K1NY bearing his name, two whistles, 50 cartridge

Three charm jackets/traditional body armour, two laptops (one Toshiba and one Compaq), Igboho’s passport, and the passports of his aides were among the items found.

The aides were eventually released after a court order.

The activist was also awarded N20 billion in damages by an Oyo State High Court. The court also ordered the Attorney General of the Federation and the Department of State Security not to arrest Igboho.
