According to a high source familiar with the situation, he was arrested at a Cotonou airport on Monday night.

Igboho was arrested by Benin Republic security forces three weeks after the Department of State Services proclaimed him sought for allegedly stockpiling weaponry, an allegation he has since disputed.

According to a source who spoke to The PUNCH, Igboho would be deported to Nigeria on Tuesday (today) from Benin Republic, one of Nigeria’s West African neighbours.

“On Monday night, he was detained in Cotonou while attempting to flee. Germany was his final destination. On Tuesday, the Benin Republic’s security forces should deport him to Nigeria, according to the source.

On July 1, 2021, Nigerian secret police invaded Igboho’s Ibadan home in the Soka neighbourhood, arresting roughly 12 of his aides and killing two of them in a gun duel.

The Nigerian Federal Government has put the Nigeria Immigration Service and the Nigeria Customs Service on high alert to prevent Igbos from fleeing the nation.

When contacted, Pelumi Olajengbesi, a member of Igboho’s legal team, stated he would consult with the main counsel, Yomi Aliyu (SAN), and would respond later.

A text contact to DSS spokesman Peter Afunanya seeking confirmation on the matter was not returned.

At a press conference on July 1, 2021, Afunanya promised that “Igboho may run as far as he can.” He’s free to conceal for as long as he wishes… But his antics will come to an end now.”
