The majority of Nigeria has been advised by the Canadian government not to be visited due to deteriorating security issues plaguing the most populous nation in Africa.

The North American nation argued that Canadians should avoid visiting Nigeria due to terrorism, armed attacks, kidnapping, and other heinous crimes.

State hotspots for terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping were listed as Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, Zamfara, and Yobe, while criminal activity was mentioned in Lagos, , and Calabar, the capital of Cross River.

Avoid non-essential travel to Nigeria due to the unpredictability of the country’s security situation and the high risk of terrorism, crime, intercommunal conflict, armed attacks, and kidnappings.

Avoid travelling to the following areas due to the risk of terrorism, armed attacks, kidnapping, and intercommunal and sectarian violence: the states of Plateau in the north, Adamawa in the north-east, and the states of Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bayelsa, Delta, Imo, and Rivers in the Niger Delta (with the exception of Rivers’ capital city, Port Harcourt, where we advise a travel advisory).

Due to the prevalence of crime, use extreme caution in the cities of Abuja, Calabar, and Lagos.

The following northeastern and northwestern states are under threat from terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping: Adamawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, Zamfara, and Yobe.
