Supreme Court strikes out suit seeking South East presidency

In advance of the 2023 elections, the Supreme Court ruled on Friday that no region of Nigeria had been unfairly treated as a result of the ’s (PDP) decision to hold an open primary in May.

Ejes Gist Newspaper reports that , a PDP stalwart, filed a lawsuit against Atiku to have the South-East zoned for the presidential ticket.

The Supreme Court lacks authority to hear “a matter that is an internal affair of the PDP,” according to the Panel of Justices, which decided to dismiss the lawsuit on Friday.

Senator Dino Melaye, the presidential spokesperson for the PDP Presidential Campaign, expressed his happiness with the Supreme Court’s decision and urged all PDP members to “embrace the party and her very sellable and capacity-driven candidate in the interest of the party.”

Atiku, 75, has previously run unsuccessfully for president of both his own party, the PDP, and both the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The politician from Adamawa who was also given the PDP’s nomination for 2019 lost to incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari of the APC in the general elections.

The former vice president will now compete against people like Omoyele Sowore, Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Bola Tinubu, and Professor Christopher Imumolen of the Accord Party (African Action Congress, AAC).
