He was born on the 16th of December, 1962, in Otukpo. He received his early education at St. Mary’s Primary School in Otukpo before moving to Jos, the state capital at the time, to complete his primary and secondary education at St. Theresa’s and St. Muramba’s Colleges, respectively.

He was the best graduating student in the class of 1973-78, with a Division I in the West African School Certificate, and he led the Debating Society and Quiz Club (WASC). He was also a standout athlete in soccer, basketball, and volleyball.

Sonny Echono Education 

After his father died in 1978, Sunday gave up his plans to study abroad and enrolled at the Murtala College of Arts, Science and Technology (MUCAST) in Makurdi to complete his ‘A’ Levels/IJMB.

He began studying architecture at Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria in 1980 and graduated with a BSc. (2nd Class Upper) in 1983 and an MSc. in 1985. In 1989, he won the Best Life Project award, and the Nigerian Institute of Architects Professional Practice Examination awarded him the Best-All-Round Performance.

Sonny Echono work Experience 

Sunday Echono worked for the Benue State Housing Agency after completing his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in 1986 before joining the Federal Civil Service in January 1987.

His father’s legacy of service and integrity as a quintessential civil servant inspired him. Sunday Echono worked for the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing in various management capacities between 1987 and 2005, including: From 1991 to 1995, he was the Secretary of the National Housing Policy Implementation Committee. From 1992 to 1995, I was the Secretary of the Special Projects Task Force. From 1993 to 1995, he served as Secretary of the Committee on Lands and Housing. From 1993 to 1994, he was the Chief Executive Architect in charge of the Department’s Administration.


Head, Council Affairs and Parastatals – 2003 to 2004 Special Assistant to the Permanent Secretary From 2004 to 2005, he served as Secretary of the Ministerial Tenders Board. Sonny Echono was among the first set of civil servants deployed to the Budget Monitoring and Price Intelligence Unit (BMPIU) or Due Process Office in February 2015, following the introduction of procurement reforms in Nigeria.

By 2016, he had been promoted to Head of Team ‘A,’ where he was in charge of project procurement review and certification for the Ministries of Works and Housing, FCT Administration, Transport, State House, Defense, Police, and all Security Agencies.

During his time in the military, he earned the following additional qualifications in his quest for personal development:

Master of Business Administration (MBA) – Benue State University – 2004 MSc, Procurement Management – University of Turin, Italy – 2011. Postgraduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) – University of Calabar – 2002

. Echono is a well-bred Civil Servant who has nearly 35 years of exemplary service under his belt. His peers admire and respect him. He was at the centre of policy formulation and reforms in the Nigerian Civil Service and its agencies during this time, including: The Nigerian Civil Service’s Administrative Guidelines are being reviewed. Financial Regulations Harmonization with the Public Procurement Act of 2007 Housing and Urban Development Policies at the National Level Maintenance Policy at the National Level Procurement Reforms and Due Process Guidelines for Nigeria’s National Building Code and Fire Safety Code Nigeria’s Armed Forces are being modernised. Implementation Framework/Manual for Federal Projects Policy/Implementation Agenda for Agricultural Transformation Education for Change: A Ministerial Strategic Plan, National ICT Sector Roadmap and e-Government Master Plan, and so on. In October 2014, Arc. Sunday S. T. Echono was appointed to the Federal Civil Service as a Permanent Secretary.

He has worked as the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministries of Agriculture and Rural Development (2014–2015), Communications (2015–2017), and Education (currently) (2017 to date).

His contributions to the architectural profession in Nigeria are equally impressive.

In November 2001, he was promoted to Honourary General Secretary (HGS) after serving as Secretary of the Admissions Committee since 1991.

From 2009 to 2013, he chaired the Institute’s Disciplinary Committee for two terms before being elected to the position of 3rd Vice President. When he was elected in November 2019, he reached the pinnacle of his profession.

He also served on the Board of Architectural Education in Nigeria (BAE), the Architects Registration Council of Nigeria, the National Environmental Standards, Regulations, Enforcement and Administration (NESREA), the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA), the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), and the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), among others.

He took management courses and workshops at prestigious institutions around the world, including the University of Bradford in the United Kingdom.
