Former SA to LG chairman

Hassan Dauda, a former Special Assistant to the Chairman of Kaduna State’s Giwa Local Government Area, was sentenced to twelve years in prison for his role in an N6.3 million Hajj fraud.

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) charged Dauda with cheating eight people of N6,342,000 before the Kaduna State High Court.

In a 16-count charge of obtaining by false pretence, abuse of office, and forgery filed before Justice M. T. Aliyu, the ICPC accused Dauda of defrauding unsuspecting victims in 2013 by using his position as a Special Assistant to the Chairman of Giwa Local Government Area to secure Hajj seats for them, an offence punishable under Section 19 of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act 2000.

Justice Aliyu found him guilty on all charges of obtaining by false pretence and sentenced him to seven years in prison without the possibility of a fine.

He was also found guilty of five counts of abuse of office and sentenced to five years in jail without the possibility of a fine.

On the counts of forgery, he was released and acquitted.

The judge remarked during his reading of the sentence that ICPC was able to prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt. The sentences will run in parallel.

The offender was apprehended by ICPC agents in October 2013 after a petition alleging his alleged corrupt behaviour, and was arraigned in May 2015 once the investigation was completed.
