Shock As Arewa, Middle Belt Forums back  Katsina Governor ’s self defense call

The Consultative Forum (ACF) and the Middle Belt Forum (MBF) have backed Governor Bello Masari’s call for his state’s citizens to arm themselves and defend themselves against bandits.

Governor Masari had advised the people of the state to arm themselves and defend themselves against bandits on Tuesday.

The Governor stated that it was unethical for people to simply surrender to the bandits without making any effort to defend themselves.

“It is the people’s meek submission that emboldens the bandits to continue their heinous activities with murderous frequency,” Governor Masari said. We need to let go of the idea that security is solely the responsibility of the government.”

Emmanuel Yawe, the ACF’s National Publicity Secretary, said he supported the Katsina governor’s call for northerners to take up arms and defend themselves against the region’s daily bandit carnage.

The ACF, according to Emmanuel Yawe, was fully supportive of Masari’s decision, emphasising that “Governor Masari has said the right thing.”

He agreed with Masari’s call for Katsina residents to arm themselves against bandits terrorising the state’s communities.

According to the National Publicity Secretary, it had been proven that bandits feared local hunters more than regular forces.

“In the rural areas, some people are armed with bows and arrows, even guns are allowed where police permits are issued because the arms are legal when such permits are issued,” the ACF spokesman said.

He recalled how local hunters in Adamawa terrorised Boko Haram, explaining that Boko Haram feared them more than the army and police combined.

Emmanuel Yawe went on to say that the locals are more familiar with the terrain than the army and police, who are “assembled from all over the country in accordance with the Federal Government policy on recruitment into government agencies,” and that it’s “no surprise they (local hunters) were recruited to join the fight against Boko Haram.” Governor Masari has made the correct decision.”

Similarly, the Middle Belt Forum’s National President, Dr. Bitrus Pogu, stated that the government should purchase and equip the people with weapons so that they can defend themselves against bandit attacks.

Pogu viewed the call as a positive development, saying that if the governor has realised the magnitude of the security challenge confronting the people, he should go one step further and assist them in defending themselves.

“This is necessary because there is a problem here,” he added. Without a doubt, the people are prepared to defend themselves, but do they have the financial means to do so? No, that is not the case. So, the whole thing reverts back to the government.”

“Let him help the communities that are vulnerable to acquire weapons and licence them in such a way that vigilantes in those communities would be adequately armed to face any security threat by the terrorists in their communities,” Pogu said, if the governor is serious about what he has said.

“If he can do that, the people will be able to defend themselves.”
