Hundreds of party delegates gathered in Abuja’s Eagle Square to vote for the new national officers.

“It is a great honour for me to have the privilege as the Chief Returning Officer of the 2021 PDP National Convention Election Chairman to announce and declare His Excellency, Senator (Dr) Iyorchia Ayu as the duly elected and returned National Chairman of our great party,” Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri said when announcing the election results.

speaks after being elected as the new National Chairman of the main opposition party in Abuja on October 31, 2021, surrounded by members of the PDP Governors’ Forum.

Senator Ayu walked down to the podium with some of the party’s governors shortly after being named the new chairman to make a brief statement.

“I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to the PDP family,” the new chairman said, beaming. “Today’s address is merely a thank-you note. We never imagined when we started this party 23 or 24 years ago that the journey would lead us to this point – a stage where we ruled for 16 years, went through some difficult times, but PDP is back for anyone who cares to look.

“And now it’s time to get Nigeria out of the terrible mess it’s been in for the past six years.” I’d like to express my gratitude to all of you who have contributed to the success of this event as delegates, observers, supporters, members of the media, and security personnel.”

The PDP had announced a special convention to elect a set of new national officers following the crisis that rocked the party’s Uche Secondus-led National Working Committee.

This decision by the party, however, did not sit well with Secondus, the suspended PDP National Chairman, who believes that the convention’s conduct will force him to resign before his term expires in December.

As part of the ongoing litigation over his suspension from the party, he went on to file an application with the Court of Appeal in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, to stop the PDP from holding the convention as planned.

Secondus, on the other hand, was unsuccessful in his attempt to prevent the convention from taking place, as the appellate court’s decision on Thursday clears the way for the party to proceed with the process. He vowed to appeal the decision.

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State is the Secretary, while Bayelsa State Governor served as Co-Chairman of the PDP National Convention Election.
