The Kaduna state House of Assembly has authorized castration as punishment for anybody convicted of rape within the state.

The Assembly gave the approval following the passage of a bill to amend the Kaduna state penal court law, 2017, by the lawmakers on Thursday, September 10. The assembly announced the approval on its Twitter handle however deleted the tweet afterward.

In July this year, the state governor, Nasir El-Rufai, mentioned the justice system of the state will not grant bail to rapists. He disclosed this when a gaggle of girls, advocating for justice for rape victims, staged a peaceable rally on the government house in Kaduna. According to Governor El-Rufai,

“In addition to life imprisonment or 21 years’ imprisonment, anyone convicted of rape will have his organ surgically removed so that even after he finishes his term, he will not be able to rape anyone again,” the governor had mentioned.
