Real Madrid knocks Chelsea out of Champions League

Real Madrid kick Chelsea out of UCL

Despite defeating Real Madrid on a night of high drama at the Bernabeu Stadium, Chelsea’s reign as European champions came to an agonising end.

Mason Mount’s wonderful finish and Antonio Rudiger’s powerful header wiped out Real’s 3-1 first-leg advantage and levelled the quarter-final tie in Spain’s capital in a Champions League epic.

Thomas Tuchel’s side were excellent throughout, and Timo Werner’s clever angle finish put them ahead on aggregate for the first time, putting them in contention for a place in the semi-finals.

Benzema, who scored a hat-trick in the first leg six days ago at Stamford Bridge, scored the game-winning goal in the 96th minute to send Real through 5-4 on aggregate.

After Rudiger slipped inside the box, Benzema, who had earlier headed against the bar on a rollercoaster night, was unmarked when he scored to break Chelsea’s hearts.

Chelsea were made to pay for their first-leg performance in the end, as Tuchel’s side came up just short of producing one of the greatest comebacks in the competition. (BBC)
