Railway workers Suspend 3-day Strike

  •  The Nigerian railway workers have suspended a three-day warning strike declared to demand improved welfare.
  • The workers announced the suspension after a separate meeting with the Nigeria Railway Corporation boss in Abuja and other stakeholders in Lagos.

After meetings with the NRC Board in Abuja and the Federal Ministry of Transport (FMOT), NRC management, and the leadership of NUR and SSA in Lagos, NUR issued a communiqué of resolutions jointly signed by President General, Senior Staff Association (SSA), Nigerian Railway Corporation, Aliyu Mainasara, President of NUR, Innocent Ajijic, and Director Admin/Human Resources, Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Dr Monsurat Omotayo.

They agreed to form a committee to review the standard condition of service immediately, with a deadline of January 31, 2022. Because every worker is already covered by the group life assurance scheme, it was agreed that personal data on deceased workers be collected for processing and immediate payment.

The parties also agreed that all train crews, as well as train passengers and goods in transit, would be covered by insurance.

Additionally, the NRC Board and FMOT have prioritised enhanced salary regimes to obtain approval for implementation as soon as possible.

The parties also agreed that no employee would be victimised as a result of his or her participation in the November 2021 three-day strike.

The parties, however, suspended the three-day warning strike and directed workers to return to work immediately as a result of the previous resolutions.
