Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu - APC Presidential Candidate

The National association of Seadogs (Pyrates Confraternity) has stated that the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate Bola Tinubu’s viral video is being taken out of context, in order to advance political goals.

The group firmly denounced those using the video for political gain, maintaining that it is apolitical and does not support any particular candidate in the upcoming 2023 presidential elections.

Recall that on Monday, August 8, a video of Confraternity members dancing to an anti-Tinubu song during a procession mocked Tinubu for a speech he gave in June in Abeokuta, Ogun State, in which he demanded that power be given to him.

In his speech in Abeokuta, Tinubu remarked, “Emi lo kan,” which translates to “It’s my turn.”

He also spoke about comforting President Muhammadu Buhari after he lost the election three times and promised to elect him president in 2015.

The song the pyrates sang had the following lyrics:

Baba wey no well, e de shout emi lo kan (“Hand dey shake, leg dey shake.” Hands shaking, legs shaking. A sick old man is shouting ‘it’s my turn’).

They sang, “Emi lo kan (2 times), Baba wey no well, him dey shout emi lokan (It’s my turn (2 times), a sick old man is shouting “it’s my turn”

The lyrics offended some Nigerians, including Professor Wole Soyinka, one of the group’s founders. In a statement, Soyinka criticized the song and called it “frankly appalling.”

The NAS Capoon, Abiola Owoaje, claimed in a statement titled “Setting the Records Straight” that the organisation held a procession to conclude its 46th Annual General Meeting, as has been customary at all events for the previous 46 years, and that no part of the procession was political.

Reviewing all of our advocacy, humanitarian, and operational activities for the year was a part of the annual general meeting. Then, as has become customary, this culminated in a procession of celebration, which has been a part of this annual process for the past 46 years. According to our assessment, nothing happened until this incredibly brief video appeared.

No part of this procession or the event itself was political, despite how certain aspects of the video are being portrayed. Instead, it was the annual general meeting’s usual climax.

This event, as well as all of our events, have never had any slanted political leanings in the organization’s history, he said.

Owoaje made it clear that despite having members who are physically challenged, the organisation does not make fun of or discriminate against anyone because of their physical condition.

“We must emphasize that we are nonpartisan. We as a group have never supported a particular candidate in any political contest, not even the general elections that will take place in 2023.

Members of our organization comes from various political parties, and they are free to back any candidate they choose.

It is extremely regrettable that political capital is being gained from this with interpretations that are completely at odds with the Pyrates Confraternity’s philosophy. We categorically and harshly condemn this.

We are aware that political sycophants are constantly spreading false information and distorting events to advance their political objectives.

We would like to emphasize once more that the National Association of Seadogs (Pyrates Confraternity) does not endorse or support any candidate for the office of President or any other office in the general elections of 2023 and beyond.
