Prof. Wole Soyinka distances Self From Pyrates Confraternity Mock Video
Prof. Wole Soyinka, an elder statesman, has expressed his disgust over a viral video that shows some alleged members of the National Association of Seadogs, also known as Pyrates Confraternity, making fun of the APC’s Asiwaju Bola Tinubu presidential candidate in a song.
“Hand dey shake, leg dey shake, baba wey no well he dey shout Emi Lokan,” which roughly translates to “With an unstable hand and leg, a man with a frail health is sounding off that it’s his turn to be Nigeria’s president,” was the chant of the group’s members in the one-minute video as they danced and chanted.
On June 3, 2022, during a meeting with party delegates in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Tinubu expressed frustration over the lack of support for his bid to win the party’s presidential nomination. It was at this time that the phrase “Emi Lokan” began to circulate throughout the country.
This, he said, having contributed to Muhammadu Buhari’s election as president in 2015, including Mr. Dapo Abiodun’s appointment as governor of Ogun State, whom he referred to as “Eleyi” (this one).
The Nobel laureate said in a statement on Monday that he was alerted to a video clip that had been going viral online of a group of people dancing and chanting while dressed in red and white, ostensibly representing the Pyrates Confraternity.
“The display acidly targets a presidential candidate in the upcoming 2023 elections,” Soyinka said.

“The Pyrates Confraternity is entitled to its freedom of expression, whether it be individually or collectively, just like any other civic group. Wole Soyinka is also true to himself. I don’t get involved in or try to influence the Confraternity’s partisan political decisions.
I’m still not aware that the association has ever released a joint statement endorsing or denouncing a particular candidate.
This is undoubtedly a strange and new development that could have unanticipated effects.
“Let me also make the following cultural statement. I carefully listened to the chant’s lyrics, and I’ll be honest: I’m horrified. It offends me, I think. I come from a society that does not make fun of physical ailments or disabilities. extremely to the contrary
No matter the type of affliction, the Yoruba religion designates a deity, Obatala, as the divine protector of the oppressed. We are born with this sensibility and carry it with us throughout our lives. It is based on the idea that everyone is still subject to mortal frailty.
“CLR James, the author of The Black Jacobins, Beyond A Boundary, and other works, is one of my favourite authors, about whom, by coincidence, I recently had cause to write.
He was my ideological uncle, I said. He had Parkinson’s disease, but even after the onset of the condition, he was still sharp, clear-headed, and aggressive.
“We engaged in political dialogue at the Dakar Festival of Negro Arts, the Tanzanian Pan-African Congress, and various other cultural and political gatherings.
Despite his difficulty, we went out to eat frequently during his lifetime. Being a part of any activity that made fun of his condition would be unthinkable and a desecration of his memory.
The essayist continued by saying that he would issue another statement regarding the development after conducting more research into what he called the association’s “strange, uncharacteristic outing.”
