To sink the presidential ambitions of former Lagos State Governor and APC National Leader Bola Tinubu, opposition elements inside the party are reportedly adopting the consensus approach in choosing its presidential flag bearer in the upcoming 2023 general elections.
According to party insiders, the strategy became necessary due to Tinubu’s apparent dominance over other presidential contenders, putting him in a strong position to become the party’s nominee.
However, according to sources, the major impediment to him is his health, which is beyond men’s control.
Senator John Akpanudoedehe, the APC Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee Secretary, has recommended using consensus to fence off what he described as moles from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, according to Vanguard.
Pro-Tinubu forces, on the other hand, have slammed the gesture, particularly in Ekiti, where Senator Tola Adeniyi, chairman of the South West Agenda for Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu 2023 (SWAGA), spoke out against it last Thursday.
According to some party sources, the demand for consensus in choosing party executives and candidates arose from the realisation by those opposed to the former Lagos State governor that he (Tinubu) could not be simply stopped in a free and fair election.
Tinubu, according to reports, has made good headway into the North-West and North-East states, attracting a large number of delegates.
According to sources, the Tinubu campaign is particularly strong in delegates-rich states like Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, and Borno.
“The APC constitution specifies that serving and previous members of the National Assembly are statutory delegates, which means that all former parliamentarians from 1999 are automatic delegates,” a party insider said.
“You can see that Tinubu is very powerful in Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, and Borno, which are states with a large number of delegates for the convention, with the majority of them linked with Tinubu.”
According to reports, the Tinubu campaign is doing well in the South-South, particularly in the states of Akwa Ibom and Delta.
However, in Akwa Ibom, he faces a formidable opponent in Akpanudoedehe, the CECPC secretary who was famously known to belong to his side until recently.
Tinubu is alleged to have formed an alternate organisation in the absence of Akpanudoedehe, to collect benefits from the state with the most Local Government Areas in the South-South.
However, it was learned that the adoption of the consensus process might see Tinubu pushed aside by powerful interests around the presidency trying to thwart him by influencing the selection of party leaders and delegates who would be automatic delegates at the national convention.
