He recommended Buhari to see beyond Kanu’s re-arrest as an opportunity to negotiate the birth of a new functional Nigeria, rather than prosecuting him.

He claims that the IPOB leader is not alone in the country’s raging secessionist agitation, and that if Kanu is deposed, another leader may emerge to carry on the war for Biafra.

On Tuesday, this online news outlet reported that Kanu had been detained in a Department of State Service (DSS) facility until the outcome of his trial by the Federal High Court in Abuja.

After Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) Shuaibu Labaran informed the court that the defendant (Kanu), who had skipped bail, had been caught and shown in court, Justice Binta Nyako issued the order.

Ikubese made the announcement to newsmen in Akure, the capital of Ondo State, in a statement titled “Nnamdi Kanu: An Opportunity for National Rebirth.”

“Perhaps the most important news in Nigeria right now is the re-arrest and arraignment of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra,” the statement stated (IPOB).

“Rather than focusing just on Kanu’s prosecution, I believe that his re-arrest should be utilised to negotiate the birth of a new functioning Nigeria.

“However, the Federal Government of Nigeria must look beyond Kanu’s trial to the greater situation.

“Kanu did not launch the Biafra agitation.

“There was the Nigerian Army’s Odumegwu Ojukwu. There was MASSOB’s Ralph Nwazuruike.

“Even if Kanu is removed from circulation, the spirit of Biafra will continue to rise as another leader may arise to lead the movement, because the Igbos believe that the Nigerian state’s current polity hinders their progress and independence.

“It’s worth noting that Kanu has a sizable following of Igbos all over the world who are willing to continue to contribute hard currency to the Biafran cause.

“If he is removed from circulation, these financiers will most likely transfer their funds to the next arrowhead, who may now evade public scrutiny in order to avoid being pursued by the Nigerian government.

“Is Kanu, however, the only one advocating for a breakaway republic?

“Sunday Adeyemo (Igboho) is advocating for a secessionist Oduduwa republic. The people of the Niger Delta are fighting for independence. In the search for their own country, the people of the Middle Belt are not forgotten.

“So Kanu isn’t the only one agitating for separation.

“Rather than focusing just on Kanu’s prosecution, I believe that his re-arrest should be utilised to negotiate the birth of a new functioning Nigeria.

“Recall that President Musa Yaradua offered amnesty to Niger Delta militants in 2009, notwithstanding the huge damage done to our oil infrastructure.

“Despite the huge fatalities, President Muhammadu Buhari promised in 2018 to provide amnesty to members of the Boko Haram sect who are willing to lay down their arms and embrace peace.

“In the same vein, I propose that President Buhari grant Mazi Nnamdi Kanu Presidential Pardon and convene a round table with all other breakaway agitators and opinion leaders from across the country to chart a new course for our country, while the charge of treasonable felony against Omoyele Sowore is dropped.

“I am personally opposed to Nigeria’s disintegration. I also oppose a nation of inequalities in which some people are treated as second-class citizens.

“My advocacy is for a functional Nigerian state in which true federalism is practised and everyone feels a sense of belonging in a regional arrangement, where each region is overseen by a Prime Minister, and the resources of each region are used for regional development with a percentage sent to the Federal Government, while the Presidency is rotated among the Prime Ministers.”
