President Buhari has approved the establishment of a new Federal government agency.
President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the establishment of the National Blood Service Commission, NBC, to replace the National Blood Transfusion Service, NBTS, which was previously a unit under the Federal Ministry of Health’s Department of Hospital Services.
The approval was published in an official Gazette titled Act No 8, National Blood Service Commission Act, 2021, Page A375-390, which was made available to journalists by Abdullahi Haruna, the Commission’s Head of Media and Publicity.
According to the statement, the approval came after the President signed the National Assembly’s Bill for the Establishment of a National Blood Service Commission.
The establishment of an NBC by the current administration, according to the statement, is a decisive step toward better health outcomes for Nigerians.
“The Commission is required by law to ensure that the National Blood Service Guidelines and Standards are followed, to maintain a system of quality assurance at all levels of service, to encourage research in all aspects of blood transfusion services, and to promote the rational use of blood, blood products, and alternatives to blood when appropriate.
“The Commission has communicated that its new name and status, which takes effect immediately as the National Blood Service Commission, NBC, more accurately reflect the mandate of ensuring the availability of safe, quality, and adequate blood services to all Nigerians.
“In his new role, Mr Amedu will transition from National Coordinator to Acting Director-General of the National Blood Service Commission, by the provisions of the Commission’s founding Act.
