Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to President Buhari for Media and Publicity, has stated that tens of millions of Nigerians voted for Muhammad Buhari’s election to the presidency in 2015.

Garba’s statement comes days after Bola Tinubu, national head of the APC, declared in Abeokuta, Ogun state, that President Buhari would not have been elected without him. The former governor of Lagos stated that Buhari had given up hope of becoming Nigeria’s leader until he interfered.

Garba stated in his statement that many people played “big and tiny roles” in the 2015 election.

The Statement reads:

On the day of the All Progressives Congress (APC) flagbearer primary, there are candidates who seek to be associated with the President’s ascent to the presidency seven years ago.

There are numerous persons who played major and minor roles in his historic election in 2015, which made history as the first time an opposition candidate defeated an incumbent president through peaceful balloting.

There are those who advised the President to run for re-election, as well as those who decided to establish the APC as the political vehicle capable of delivering success where all other opposition parties and alliances had failed.

These judgments may have been made by a small group. However, they were delivered by thousands and supported by tens of millions of voters. No one can or should assert having made the impossible possible.

As significant as that moment was, it should not determine the outcome of the next general election.

What counts is the future: the policy platforms, the ideas, the motivation, and the resolve to take over the President’s stewardship of our country and build upon his legacy to make our country better than it has ever been.

The individual who best exemplifies these characteristics will lead our party and the nation forward.
