Nigerian prophet, sentenced to 7 years in jail for defrauding church member of N59.7 million

Cletus Ilongwo, a prophet with roots in Lagos, was given a seven-year prison term for duping one of his church members N59.7 million by an Ikeja Special Offenses Court in Lagos, Ejes Gist Newspaper reports

The leading pastor of the Power of the Holy Ghost Evangelical Ministry in Lagos, Ilongwo, was detained and charged by the EFCC in 2018 with defrauding a church member after the person reported a case of fraud against him involving N 85 million.

The churchgoer said that Ilongwo’s actions lost him his position at one of the nation’s first-generation banks.

Ilongwo was found guilty of seven counts of offences that had some element of theft and fraud today, September 22.

In her ruling, Justice Sherifat Solebo directed that the complainant be given the property that belonged to the convict and was located at No. 3 Popoola Ajayi St., Diamond Estate in Amuwo Odofin.

In addition, Solebo stated, “His Toyota Prado is also to be forfeited to the Federal Government as restitution to settle the complainant”

According to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the convicted man conned Mr. Obinna Ezenwaka, a former member of his congregation, on January 29, 2016.

Nwandu Ukoha, an attorney for the EFCC, informed the court that Ilongwo received the money through his bank in instalments.

According to Ukoha, Ezenwaka gave the convict the money on several occasions in 2016 under the guise of aiding the convict in buying a house at 165c Diamond Estate, Amuwo Odofin, Lagos.

In his defence, Mr. Albert Imolodia, the defence attorney, told the court that the defendant was a first-time offender.

“He is a family man who provides for those that depend on him. We beseech the court to balance kindness with justice “said Imolodia.

However, the EFCC attorney urged the court to impose the maximum sentence permitted by law and a restitution order in accordance with the Advance Fee Fraud Act on the convicted party.
