A senior member of staff at the Swiss embassy in Tehran has died after falling from the high-rise building where she lived.

The 51-year-old woman was the embassy’s first secretary, according to an emergency services spokesperson who did not give her name.


On Tuesday morning, police in the Kamraniyeh area notified paramedics, but she had been “dead for a while,” he said.


An employee of the Swiss foreign ministry died in an accident, according to the Swiss foreign ministry.

A spokesperson said, “The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs and its head Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis are saddened by the tragic death and express their deepest condolences to the family.”


The ministry also mentioned that it was in contact with the family as well as Iranian officials.


It did not provide any further details about the death, citing data security and privacy concerns.

According to the Iranian state news agency Irna, the Iranian foreign ministry has expressed its condolences.


The death was being investigated by the appropriate authorities, according to the ministry, and the findings will be made public shortly.


According to Irna’s article, suicide had already been ruled out by emergency services.


Since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, when Washington and Tehran cut ties, Switzerland has represented US diplomatic interests in Iran.
