Police arrest 74-yr-old man to over alleged s3xual abuse of 12-yr-old girl

Ejes Gist Newspaper reports that a 74-year-old man, Bassey Inyang, from Calabar, has been arrested by for allegedly sexually abusing a 12-year-old girl.

Following an alarm raised by members of the community, men from the Cross River Police Command’s Anti-Cult and Kidnapping Squad hauled the suspect away from 14 Waddell Street, Mbukpa in Calabar.

According to a witness, this was not Inyang’s first time, and other parents who had similar situations also shared their stories.

They claimed the 74-yr-old man‘s luck ran out when the 12-year-mother old’s (name withheld) came to the suspect’s compound to confront him after her daughter developed a Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD).

They claim the mother discovered blood stains on the minor’s panties and asked what occurred, to which she replied that she had been sexually abused by the 74-yr-old man.

Residents Condemn the Act of the 74-year- Old Man

Mr Pendo Ned, Secretary of Ikot Edet Etim village in Efut Abua West clan in the Mbukpa district, said the 74-yr-old man was taken before the Community Head, Muri Ebuka Ebuka, when they received the information.

“The culprit confessed to the horrible crime in front of the entire neighborhood.”

“We strongly condemn the suspect’s alleged crime against minors; we have invited the police to select him for further questioning,” he stated.

Mr. James Ibor, a child rights activist and the Chairman of the Cross River Child Protection Network, also asked the police to complete their investigation so that the suspect might face charges.

Residents Hands over 74-yr-Old man to the police

Ibor, who is also the Secretary of the Administration of Criminal Justice Monitoring, has stated that he will not give up the case of the 74-yr- old man until justice is done.

When reached, DSP Irene Ugbo, State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), said she had not yet been briefed on the case but promised to look into it.
