Parading the suspects at the command headquarters, the state Police boss, Imohimi Edgal, said they were arrested after they concluded plans to sell the car, a Ford Fusion, to a dealer, in a hotel situated at Mushin, Lagos.
Speaking with journalists, the two suspects gave different sides of the story.
Chinedu Frederick said he was on duty when the other suspect, Bassey, approached him and sold the idea of selling the Ford Fusion for N2 million and assured him of the success of the deal, which would fetch them millions of naira.
According to him, “I was doing my job as a cook when Bassey came to me and suggested that we steal our boss’ vehicle and sell it, assuring that one Kayode, a car dealer, will either buy it or connect us to a buyer.”
For Bassey: “I am here over false accusation of car theft. When I resumed for work on Sunday, Chinedu came to my post and said he wanted to buy fuel with Oga’s car.
“I asked him why he didn’t use a keg. He said it would be difficult for him to turn it into the car.
“I asked him if he had called Oga and he said yes, so I opened the gate for him. That is what brought me here.”
