The Nasarawa State Labour Party has stated that it will seek two million votes for the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in the 2023 general election.

Alexander Emmanuel, the party’s state chairman, made the announcement in Karu Local Government Area on Saturday while receiving 27,000 decamped members of the All Progressives Congress, Peoples Democratic Party, and All Progressives Grand Alliance into the Labour Party.

Emmanuel stated that the party would begin a door-to-door campaign across the state’s 13 Local Government Areas as soon as the Independent National Electoral Commission lifted the campaign ban for the upcoming elections.

He accused the Federal Government of ignoring the plight of the country’s university students, who have been out of school for over seven months due to the Academic Staff Union of Universities’ strike, and expressed confidence that Peter Obi would win the 2023 presidential election.

“These 27,000 decampees from the APC, PDP, and APGA have come to declare their support for our presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, and other Labour Party candidates in Nasarawa state because the political parties in power have failed us in all aspects of the economy,” he said.

“Universities have been closed for over seven months, and the Federal Government has made no commitment to address the issue.” There is insecurity and unemployment throughout the country, which is why we must elect competent leaders in the upcoming elections.

“As soon as INEC lifts the campaign ban, we will launch a door-to-door campaign for our candidates across the state because we are targeting 2 million votes for Peter Obi in Nasarawa state, and we will work tirelessly to ensure victory for all our candidates.”

Earlier in his speech, Shirsha Adi, the LP’s National Vice-Chairman for North Central, welcomed the defectors and urged them to be good ambassadors for the party and work tirelessly towards the party’s victory in 2023.

Manasseh Bako, one of the defectors who spoke on behalf of the others, thanked the Labour Party for accepting them and pledged their complete loyalty to the party’s leaders and existing members across the state.
