The Presidency has warned the People Democratic Party (PDP) and other opposition parties to put their 2023 dreams on hold since the great majority of Nigerians hold President Muhammadu Buhari in high regard and will never forsake him.
Garba Shehu, the President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, stated this on Tuesday after attending Eid prayers in Daura, Katsina State.
Shehu believes Nigerians are too wise to allow another political party to win the presidency in 2023.
“The President enjoys unwavering support, not only in his hometown but throughout the country, and it is enough for the opposition to realise that the President is extremely important to the ruling party and Nigerians in general,” he stated.
“Again, he is a political stumbling block that they will not be able to overcome by 2023.

‘’We feel the PDP and other opposition parties are harbouring unrealistic expectations of gaining power in 2023.
“The APC and President Buhari’s leadership will never be abandoned by the people. I assure you that in 2023, the people will be looking forward to the President delivering on what he has been working on for the country in terms of infrastructure and the well-being of the country’s youth.
“No one is going to take the risk of asking another party to take over in 2023,” he stated.
The PDP criticised the Presidency in response to Shehu’s remarks, claiming that the assumption that Nigerians will be waiting for President Muhammadu Buhari “to guide the way in 2023” has heightened public fears of a self-succession conspiracy by the Presidency’s cabal.
The statement, headed ‘Buhari Presidency’s 2023 Comments Smacks of Self-Succession Plot,’ was signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan.

“Nigerians were stunned when President Buhari’s spokesman, Shehu Garba, publicly said in Daura, Mr President’s hometown, that President Buhari “constitutes a political obstacle” that anyone seeking to succeed him in 2023 “cannot dismantle,” according to Ologbondiyan.
“Such a declaration by the Presidency, which is nearing the end of its second and final term, is not only provocative, but it also smells like a scheme to derail our constitutional democratic order.
“Perhaps the Buhari Presidency’s remark explains why there has been such a massive onslaught against our democratic institutions, including the Electoral Act.”
He stated that the PDP and the majority of Nigerians across party lines are “issuing a harsh warning to the President’s handlers” to notice that such plans will be opposed vehemently.
