The decision was made at a closed-door meeting in Abuja over the weekend attended by Vice President Yemi Osibanjo and other stakeholders.

According to our source, the party’s leaders are considering removing Mai Mala Buni, the chairman of the party’s Caretaker/Extraordinary National Convention Planning Committee, as well as all governors on the panel.

In the Caretaker/Extraordinary National Convention Planning Committee, Buni represents Yobe State, Sani Bello of Niger State represents the North-Central, and Governor Isiaka Oyetola of Osun State represents the South-West.

The decision reached at the end of the meeting included the immediate reconstitution of an interim panel following the removal of the governors.

The APC is experiencing a series of splits among its members for a variety of reasons.

On Tuesday, Okosisi Ngwu, an APC member, filed a petition in the Abuja High Court seeking the dissolution of the Buni-led committee.

Ngwu also asked the court to declare the committee’s actions null and void.

The Supreme Court’s decision on the governorship election in Ondo State in 2020 further divided the party.

While the Supreme Court declared APC’s Rotimi Akeredolu the winner of the election and dismissed the appeal filed by the Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate, Eyitayo Jegede, SAN, the court also removed Buni as the party’s chairman.

Following the Supreme Court’s decision to invalidate Buni’s chairmanship, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo (SAN), called for the suspension of the party’s ward congresses, which were held on Saturday.

Despite the Minister’s advice, the APC held its ward congress on Saturday, even though the process could be annulled in the future as a result of the judgement.

The Supreme Court reiterated the provisions of Section 183 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 in affirming Akeredolu’s election (as amended).

“The governor shall not hold any other executive office or paid employment in any capacity whatsoever during the period when he holds office,” the section reads.
