On Sunday morning, gunmen opened fire on St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, the capital of Ondo State’s Owo Local Government Area, killing numerous worshippers.

Ejes Gist Newspaper reports that  Many of those who incurred injuries were rushed to the Federal Medical Center, FMC, in Owo, according to an unconfirmed number of remains removed from the church.

Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu hails from the town.

According to eyewitnesses, the gunmen rushed the church and started fire on the congregation while the ceremony was in progress.

When the attackers approached, the worshippers were caught off guard, according to one eyewitness who requested anonymity.

He went on to say that the number of victims could be greater because some of the people who were taken to the hospital died.

According to a nurse in Owo who spoke on the condition of anonymity, there are inadequate medical experts on duty to care for the injured victims in the hospital’s emergency unit, and some of the victims have been transported to private hospitals.

Tee-Leo Ikoro, the Ondo command’s Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the occurrence to our reporter over the phone.

“I was briefed on the situation that occurred,” he stated, “but we are now investigating.”
