Over 30m Jobs Available As Nigerian Government Improves Energy
Nigeria’s Energy Sector Gets Boost with New Gazettes: Potential to Create 30 Million Jobs.
In a significant move to revitalise Nigeria’s energy sector and create employment opportunities for its youth, the Federal Government has launched two pivotal documents: the National Energy Plan (NEP) and the National Energy Master Plan (NEMP). These revised editions, produced by the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), were unveiled in Abuja on Wednesday, marking the first time energy policy documents have been officially gazetted in the country.

Globally, the energy transition is poised to generate 30 million new jobs, and the Nigerian government aims to tap into this potential. The NEP and NEMP serve as a comprehensive roadmap for energy transition, efficiency, diversification, and reliability, crucial for powering Nigeria’s industries, enhancing economic development, and attracting investments.
During the launch, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Hon. Ekperipe Ekpo, emphasised the collaborative effort required from both public and private sectors to address energy challenges. He underscored that energy transition supports sustainable growth, reduces pollutants, improves health, fosters economic growth, opens investment opportunities in green technology, and mitigates global warming’s adverse effects.

“Everyone benefits from increased energy security, cleaner air, universal energy access, and several environments – a fantastic window of time for employment, social advancement, and financial security,” Ekpo stated.
However, experts argue that Nigeria’s energy sector needs more substantial investment to meet global standards. Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, Director General of the ECN, has reiterated that Nigeria requires approximately $4 billion annually to achieve its renewable energy goals by 2050.
An industry expert, requesting anonymity, noted that while the new documents demonstrate the government’s commitment to energy sustainability, challenges such as inadequate infrastructure and limited electricity access might impede progress.

The expert suggested that Nigeria must adopt a holistic approach, focusing on diversifying energy resources and ensuring energy efficiency and availability to guarantee reliable energy access for all Nigerians.
While these objectives are commendable, their realisation will unfold over time, dependent on sustained effort and investment.
