In an interview with Yoruba monitored by , Ooni stated that those advocating for the Yoruba Nation had their cause within their grasp and offered the choice of dialogue or breaking away.

“They should have called the agitators for a dialogue, as I have always told the government,” he said.

“God will be with Sunday Igboho; he grew up in Ife, and everything he is today began in Ife. Ife land includes Ife and Modakeke. He is a farmer’s son.

“However, he began by wanting to fight for his kinsmen back home. He stood up and fought for the Oke Ogun victims. We are grateful to God for saving his life. He tried his hardest, but he became overwhelmed when he began to receive various pieces of advice from various people.

“I went to see President Buhari about his case, and we talked about it,” I informed him that Igboho is our son, and he advised us to caution him to remain calm and patient, but Igboho refused to listen.

“Many people gave him bad advice. He paid attention to them. He began abusing everyone, even monarchs.

“After I left President Buhari’s residence, I convened a meeting with Yoruba monarchs and elders to advise Igboho to exercise patience, but he was carried away by the praises of those who were not even firmly behind him.”

“He said so many hurtful things, but he is still our son. Forgiveness belongs to God. He’s been forgiven by us. He would not have ended up in his current predicament if he had listened.

“We’re doing everything we can to secure his release.” Who is capable of fighting the government? To get your rights from the government, you must be smart and use your senses rather than yelling.”
