Dr. Olumide Phillips was born on July 28, 1945. His alma mater was Lagos Methodist Boys’ High School (1959-1963). He attended Igbobi College in Lagos for his secondary school education, where he excelled in Physics, Chemistry, and Pure and Applied Mathematics.
Phillips Professional Career
As a Mobil Scholar, Dr. Olumide Phillips earned a B.Sc Hons in Mechanical Engineering from Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria in 1970. Olumide began his engineering career as a 20-month apprentice with BP Oil Nigeria before enrolling in September 1967 at Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria to pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Dr. Olumide Phillips spent six months as a petroleum engineer at Dunlop Nigeria in Ikeja before joining Gulf Oil Nigeria in January 1971. Olumide worked on reservoir engineering, production engineering, drilling and well site engineering, and geological and geophysical subsurface studies at Gulf Oil.
He began his postgraduate studies in petroleum and natural gas engineering at Pennsylvania State University in January 1973. In August 1974, he earned his master’s in petroleum and natural gas engineering. In May 1976, he became the first person to be awarded a Ph.D. in both Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering as well as Operations Research.
His research interests include reservoir modeling and simulation, geological modeling, enhanced oil recovery, thermal recovery, complex linear flow models, three-dimensional three-phase flow in subsurface porous media and pipes, petroleum compositional simulation, queueing models, optimization techniques, linear and complex flow models, and mathematical programming.
During his postgraduate studies, Dr. Phillips worked as a research and teaching assistant as well as a consultant on numerous advanced projects.
