Request for IPOB’s proscription unachievable
Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, the apex Igbo sociocultural organization, has informed President Muhammadu Buhari that it is impossible to achieve his request for international partners, particularly the United States and the United Kingdom, to take additional measures to designate the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) as a terrorist organization.
Ohanaeze claimed that by refusing to provide justice to all, the president is the only one igniting secessionist agitations in the Southeast.
In an interview with Bloomberg, Buhari begged Nigeria’s foreign allies, particularly the United States and the United Kingdom, to also ban the group from the global financial system.
But in a statement released in Enugu by Ohanaeze’s spokesman, Alex Ogbonnia, the group said: “The request by Mr. President to the West is most impractical because the West observes the pathetic governance paradigm in the country with keen interest and utter resignation.
Without a doubt, all democracies require justice, equity, tolerance of one another, and institutional forbearance, all of which are lacking in Nigeria today.
“Mr. President is reminded that the hallmarks of the British people’s enviable government with an unwritten constitution are their deep sense of justice, fortitude, restraint, civic virtues, and forbearance. In a similar vein, democratic norms and values rooted in justice and patriotism, rather than just the constitution, are what support the US democracy.

According to the document, IPOB started its calls for the establishment of a state of Biafra as a result of President Buhari’s leadership of the Southeast region’s marginalization and extreme injustice.
“What the IPOB is asking for, in my opinion, is very clear: Treat us as partners in the Nigerian project, or let us leave,” it continued.
On the other hand, how can one explain the obvious lopsidedness in the appointments of military and paramilitary personnel to head the following organizations with little or no Southeast considerations? These include the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Airforce, Nigerian Navy, Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Security (DSS), National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Nigeria Correctional Service, Nigeria Immigration Service, and Nigeria Customs Service, among others.
Ohanaeze pointed out that the President disregarded Maitama Sule, a leading Nigerian patriot, democrat, and diplomat, who urged Buhari to let justice be a key component of good governance before his passing.
Mr. President is aware that he disregarded Alhaji Maitama Sule, Nigeria’s top patriot, democrat, and diplomat, when he offered his timeless counsel.
In congratulating the President, the late Alhaji Maitama Sule reminded him that “good governance depends on justice.” “Extend justice to all and sundry, irrespective of religion or tribe,” the Mr. President should do.
“Sule reminded Mr. President that an atheist with moral integrity and a sense of justice can govern successfully, far better than a believer with no regard for right and wrong.
“Sule continued by saying that the only way to solve Nigeria’s problems is through equity and justice for all, never through force, intimidation, or power.
“The prophetic Sule urged him to treat all regions of the nation fairly because, in his view, equity and justice lead to peace and stability.
“He further stated that there can never be peace and development in the absence of justice and equity. Sule and others have predicted that without development, there will be widespread unemployment and poverty, and that idle men are the devil’s workshop.
On the other hand, as Maitama Sule predicted, the main reason for the unrest in the South East is the South East’s deliberate alienation from the centers of power.
A people who are denied justice might not be interested in peace, according to the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, led by Ambassador Professor George Obiozor.
A new Benue massacre was reported as I was writing this: “On Monday, no fewer than 16 kinsmen of Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State were reportedly killed in a new attack by suspected armed herdsmen who invaded Udei and Yelwata communities in the state’s Guma Local Government Area, LGA.
The report, which has gone viral, states that “the latest attack comes about 10 days after a similar attack claimed several lives in Igama village, Edumoga Ehaje, Okpokwu LGA, and four days after a lawmaker and his sibling were also killed and beheaded by the marauders in Orokam, Ogbadibo LGA of the state.
“Ohanaeze asserts that Nigeria will be a better place if Mr. President confronts the threat of the Fulani herdsmen who have been terrorizing various states, communities, and people for over seven years now with similar obsession and commitment deployed to IPOB.”
