The South-East Governors and Leaders issued a communiqué after a meeting in Enugu State, saying they believe in one united Nigeria based on justice, equality of rights, fairness, love, and respect for one another.
The South-East Leaders underlined threats made by some organisations against people in the region and vowed to defend everyone, whether from other regions or our own, and pleaded with the leaders of other regions to safeguard their people.
The statement reads as follows:
“We condemn the assassination of security personnel, the destruction of key infrastructure, and the death of people in the South East and other parts of the country. We request that our security agencies carry out their responsibilities by the rules of engagement and the law.”
“In the ongoing constitutional amendment, we request that our National Assembly from the South-East support the construction of a State Police.”
“We categorically reject the acts of violent secessionist organisations in the South East and elsewhere, stating unequivocally that we do not support them and that they do not speak for the South East. The perception that South East Leaders are mute about some of our youth secessionists is incorrect. South-East governors, Ohaneze President, National Assembly members, and other significant leaders have all spoken out against such agitations in the past. South-East Leaders have established a committee to engage such teenagers in stopping and allowing elders to speak to address such anxieties to avoid mismanaging the sad situation.”
“Our Governors and Ohaneze Ndigbo were urged by the meeting to communicate with indigenes from the northern part of Nigeria as well as indigenes from other regions to ensure the safety of the nation Nigeria and its people in the South East.”
“The meeting backed Ebubeagu, our South East joint security outfit, and asked them to collaborate with security authorities while respecting the rights and privileges of all South East residents and visitors.”
