Nigerian Labour Congress Threatens Nationwide Strike Over Joe Ajaero’s Possible Detention

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a strong warning of a nationwide strike if its President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, is detained by the police. This development comes after the union held an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on Tuesday to address Ajaero’s recent summons by the police.

NLC President, Joe Ajaero, Summoned by Police for Alleged Terrorism Financing, Treasonable Felony (Full List)

Ajaero has been invited by the Office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Intelligence Response Team (IRT), on allegations including criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime. The letter detailing these allegations requires Ajaero to appear for questioning on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, at the IRT Complex in Guzape District, Abuja.

In response, the NLC NEC resolved that Ajaero should honor the police invitation. However, they have also instructed their legal team to seek an extension of the appearance date. The Deputy President of the NLC, Comrade Ado Kabiru Sani, has urged workers and affiliated bodies to remain on high alert for further instructions should the police proceed with detaining Ajaero.

“As a committed labour center, we will honor the invitation of the police because we are not a faceless organization, but we are working with our lawyer for an extension of time,” Sani stated. “In the event that the President is arrested, all workers will down tools immediately. We should wait for further directives from our leadership.”
