- Andrew Cuomo, the governor of New York, has resigned in the wake of a sexual harassment scandal.

Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York announced his resignation on Tuesday, facing possible impeachment over sexual harassment claims from 11 women and mounting pressure from fellow Democrats to resign.

Cuomo, who was praised a year ago for his handling of the Covid-19 pandemic before being engulfed in harassment allegations and claims that he covered up the scale of deaths in nursing homes, had a stunning turn of fortune.
In a live televised address, Cuomo said, “I believe the best way I can help now, given the circumstances, is if I step aside and let government get back to government.”
“In 14 days, my resignation will take effect.”
Cuomo, who will hand over the reins to fellow Democrat Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul, denied the sexual harassment allegations detailed in a report released last week by the New York Attorney General’s office.

Cuomo stated, “The report said I sexually harassed 11 women.” “That was the headline that was heard and seen by the public. Outrage was the reaction. It ought to have been. It was, however, false.”
He did, however, express his desire to apologise “deeply, deeply” to any women who may have been offended by his actions.
Cuomo, who was once considered a possible Democratic presidential candidate, said, “I’ve been too familiar with people.” “I hug and kiss women and men on a regular basis. I’ve been doing it my whole life.”
“I’ve never crossed the line with anyone in my mind,” he said. “However, I was unaware of the extent to which the line had been redrawn.
“There are generational and cultural shifts that I simply did not recognise. And I should have done so. “There are no justifications.”

Cuomo explained, “I thought a hug and putting my arm around a staff member while taking a picture was friendly, but she found it to be too forward.”
“I thought I was being nice when I kissed a woman on the cheek at a wedding, but she thought it was too aggressive.”
Cuomo, whose father Mario was also governor of New York, was elected governor in 2010 and easily reelected in 2014 and 2018 in the heavily Democratic state.
Cuomo called himself a “fighter” and a “New Yorker, born and bred,” saying his “instinct is to fight through this controversy because I truly believe it is politically motivated.”
However, he stated that he had decided to withdraw because an impeachment trial would “consume government,” cost taxpayers millions of dollars, and “brutalise people.”
He stated, “Government needs to function today.” “Government must deliver. And the last thing the state government should be doing is wasting energy on distractions.”
Hochul, who will become New York’s first female governor, was described as “smart and competent” by Cuomo, who promised a “seamless” transition.
Cuomo has been under increasing pressure to resign in recent days, with President Joe Biden, two Democratic senators from New York, and a number of state legislators all calling for him to do so.
His announcement came just days after a top aide, Melissa DeRosa, resigned and a former executive assistant, Brittany Commisso, filed a criminal complaint against him.
Last year, while they were working at Cuomo’s executive mansion, Commisso claimed Cuomo touched her inappropriately twice, groping her behind and breast.
