Recruitment is expected to train graduates who will be in charge of collecting soil samples and soil tests and will also provide extension services to farmers under the National Young Farmers Scheme launched in November 2020 by President Muhammadu Buhari.
NALDA’s Executive Secretary, Paul Ikonne, announced this in Abuja on Monday while briefing journalists on the agency’s activities, reported Daily Confidence.
Mr Paul Ikonne clarified that understanding soil requirements is necessary because it is important to achieve food security in the country.
Without knowing our soil, we can not achieve food security without getting our farmers to know what the soil needs. On that basis, under the National Young Farmers Scheme, Mr President has guided and approved the participation of over 30,000 young Nigerians who are graduates and have a history in agriculture or research, Mr. Ikonne said in the Daily Trust.
The National Agency for Agricultural and Land Development (NALDA) is one of the federal government agencies responsible for leveraging the full potential of Nigeria’s vast arable land, empowering smallholder and large-scale farmers, and fostering the push for food security.
Recently, the organization initiated an initiative called the National Young Farmers’ Scheme to include 1,000 young people in each of the 774 agricultural local councils.
Mr. Ikonne said the agency will intensively train graduates on soil sampling and soil testing for two weeks, during which the workers will be fully engaged.
Mr. Ikonne said that the jobs process that has begun will be carried out in partnership with the Soil Science Institute of Nigeria and the government of the state.
