Meanwhile,   in order to draw real Foreign Direct Investments (FDIs) into Nigeria, the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) has urged the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to find a solution to the nation’s fluctuating exchange rates.

The call was included in a communiqué from the NESG Board of Directors meeting that took place over the weekend.

“The failure to address the current condition of multiple exchange rates continues to reduce the flow of foreign investments and official diaspora remittances,” the Communique states in part.

When there is a real risk to their ability to access and repatriate investment proceeds or when the functional currency is experiencing sporadic depreciation, international investors will not invest, as they are shrewd and logical. Multiple foreign exchange (FX) markets with wide price spreads provide opportunities for speculation, round-tripping, cronyism, and outright corruption, which have a negative impact on the economy, according to the NESG.

The group claimed that there was no better time than the present to harmonise the FX rates.

The federal government was urged by NESG to “Return to the path of debt sustainability in the face of dwindling revenues not to create a debt burden for future governments” in response to the nation’s rising debt.

The statement continued, “Nigeria must prioritise spending, restrict our spending to things we can afford, and eradicate waste and corruption in government. To reflect the austere times we are in, governments at all levels should set an example by drastically reducing governance costs (such as those associated with the operation of legislatures and the proliferation of government agencies).

Further, the NESG counselled the federal government to develop a long-term plan for eliminating subsidy, which has had a significant negative impact on the nation’s revenue.

“The federal government’s proposed Medium Term Expenditure Framework makes it abundantly clear that the rising cost of fuel subsidies has reached unsustainable levels. Reports from the Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget, and National Planning make it abundantly clear that the current fuel subsidy regime has a crippling effect on our country’s already precarious fiscal situation.

The group also urged the federal government to investigate a programmatic subsidy removal that mitigates the effects on our most vulnerable population through a coordinated and successfully transmitted social protection regime.
