Mother of Three who Stole Two School Pupils Bags 28 years Imprisonment

A mother of three, Mary Okon Effiong, was sentenced to 28 years in prison for stealing two pupils of Saint Philip‘s Primary School, Use Offot for sale in Osisioma Ngwa, Abia State, by Akwa Ibom State High Court sitting in Uyo.
In her extrajudicial statement, “Effiong told the police that after her agreement with one Blessing Sunday alias Mummy Vom from Osisioma Ngwa in Abia State, she went to school and lured the two pupils, who hired her to look for children in Akwa Ibom and bring her to Abia State.”
In evidence, one of the children narrated how the convict took them to Itam Market on a tricycle, where she bought them new clothes to change their school uniform.
However, when a man saw the convict in a bush undressing the kids and raised an alarm, Luck ran out of her, which led to her arrest and was taken to Saint Philip’s Primary School where the Headteacher identified the kids as her pupils, who refused to know the convict.
Justice Okon Okon, in his judgement delivered this morning, described Mary Effiong, a native of Ekpri Nsukara Offot, Uyo, as a motherhood embarrassment.
He said the convict left her own children to kidnap the children of other people for financial gain, speaks volumes of her wickedness.
“The judge held that “but the accused would have succeeded in trafficking the children from Uyo to Aba for proof and eventually selling them to a ready and willing buyer.
“The Court described Effiong as “a killer of joy set to cause grief and inflict pain on other parents, while protecting and directing her own children with jealousy.
Justice Okon stated that “the convict’s behaviour was abominable and despicable, and the accused had to be severely punished to serve as a deterrent in the illicit trade to others of her ilk.”
He believed that the punishment was to run simultaneously.
Under Section 380 of the Criminal Code, Cap., child stealing is punishable. 38, Volume 2, Laws of the Nigerian State of Akwa Ibom, 2000.
