Oliver Schultz, a little lad is recovering after falling victim to a rare side-effect from coronavirus.

The situation even lead to his heart being inflamed.

Oliver Schultz was diagnosed with multi-system inflammatory syndrome – a condition that leads to different body parts becoming severely inflamed.

For the 11-year-old schoolboy, his hands went bright red and his eyes badly bloodshot as he lay in hospital battling the cruel infection.

Hailing from Pennsylvania, Oliver needed treatment in intensive care at UPMC Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh.

MIS-C only seems to affect younger coronavirus patients, according to reports. It causes organs such as the heart, lung and kidneys to become inflamed, and can also cause the brain, skin and eyes to be irritated.

Originally, Oliver’s concerned mum thought he was just low on fluids when she took him to see a doctor, The Mirror reported.

He immediately tested positive for Covid-19 before being diagnosed with MIS-C.

The horse-riding enthusiast is now home, and focussing on getting better.

He said: “It’s what I love to do and I don’t feel the same without riding my horse every day.”

His mum, Aimee, told WPXI that there is not a lot of information out there about the rare condition.

She said: “The scariest thing for my husband and I is not knowing. It’s new, so there’s no research. We don’t know what the long-term effects will be for him. What his future will look like.”

The disease has attacked every system in Oliver’s body, according to local media, and he has had aches and rashes all over.

His heart has become inflamed, according to his mum.

She said: “His heart struggled for a good while at home, and that was the most affected organ, and it will take a long time and a long recovery, but at least he is still here with us.”

She said that “you wouldn’t want this to happen to anyone”.

His desperate family are now trying to raise cash to pay some of their medical bills.

A GoFundMe page has bene set up for well-wishers to donate to Oliver’s fund.

The page explains: “The mounting medical bills, insurance company phone calls while still in ICU to collect payments, and a projection of six months to heal Oliver’s heart that was badly damaged by Covid-19 and MIS-C have left this family with chronic health concerns, financial fears, and a need for community support.”

So far locals have raised $15,503 towards a mammoth $50,000 target.
