s side currently lead their upcoming opponents in the standings by ten points, with another defeat for the Blues seemingly putting their title bid in jeopardy.

Man City were certainly counting their lucky stars against Arsenal, who ultimately lost 2-1 in a contentious match on New Year’s Day. Even admits that his team probably should have come up second best on the day.

As Mikel Arteta once again fell to his former master, Riyad Mahrez and Rodri’s efforts cancelled out a first-half opener from Bukayo Saka, and while the champions surprised some by fielding an incredibly strong team for the FA Cup amid a COVID-19 cluster, it ensured City’s progress with a 4-1 victory over Swindon Town last Friday.

Man City’s win over Ben Garner’s side was their seventh in a row in all competitions as they look to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table, and the returning Etihad faithful should be in for a treat for their first home game of 2022.

Guardiola’s relentless crop has won each of their last seven home games in all competitions – including each of their last five in the Premier League – and despite playing without a recognized striker for much of the season, City has averaged at least three goals per Premier League game at the Etihad.

The reigning champions have won 11 games in a row in the Premier League, but they can’t take anything for granted against title-chasing opponents who have been buoyed by reaching a mid-season cup final.

Antonio Conte’s former club Chelsea reunited with Tottenham Hotspur for the second leg of their EFL Cup semi-final on Wednesday, and the Blues got the job done in North London to advance to the final.

The decision to replace Hugo Lloris with Pierluigi Gollini did not sit well with Spurs fans, and it was a decision that did not pay off as the Italian failed to meet Mason Mount’s corner and Antonio Rudiger headed home to ensure a 3-0 aggregate victory.

The Blues have a chance to win it all against either Liverpool or Arsenal next month, but for now, keeping their slim title hopes alive is the priority for Thomas Tuchel’s side, who are at risk of falling 13 points behind City if they lose at the Etihad.

Should Liverpool beat Brentford a day later, the Blues could finish third on the weekend, but they have excelled away from home amid a spate of Stamford Bridge stalemates, winning six of their last eight top-flight games on rival turf and conceding a league-low six goals.

Man City’s Gabriel Jesus saved the day in a 1-0 victory at Stamford Bridge earlier this season, but the champions haven’t beaten Chelsea since the 2017-18 season, when they won 2-1 at the Etihad.

Manchester City Premier League form:

Before the Swindon win, Man City’s COVID-19 outbreak forced seven first-team players – including Guardiola – into isolation, and it’s unclear how many of the unnamed group will be able to return.

Two players are thought to be affected: Phil Foden and Oleksandr Zinchenko, while John Stones is close to returning from a knock and Riyad Mahrez is still with Algeria at the Africa Cup of Nations.

If Zack Steffen is not among the COVID-affected group, Ederson will prepare to wrestle the gloves back from him, while Aymeric Laporte will replace Nathan Ake if Stones is ruled out once more.

Tuchel has no new injury concerns for Chelsea’s top-of-the-table clash, but Ben Chilwell, Reece James, Trevoh Chalobah, and AFCON representative Edouard Mendy are all out, and Andreas Christensen has contracted coronavirus.

Thiago Silva and N’Golo Kante both came off the bench against Spurs after recovering from COVID-19 infections and could start at the Etihad, but it will be difficult for the latter to displace Mateo Kovacic or Jorginho.

In midweek, Malang Sarr looked comfortable in a left-hand side role and should start here with Christensen out, while Kai Havertz will push for a place in the final third over Timo Werner.

Manchester City possible starting lineup:

Ederson; Walker, Dias, Laporte, Cancelo; Gundogan, Rodri, De Bruyne; B. Silva, Jesus, Foden

Chelsea possible starting lineup:

Kepa; T. Silva, Rudiger, Sarr; Azpilicueta, Jorginho, Kovacic, Alonso; Mount, Havertz; Lukaku

We say: Manchester City 2-0 Chelsea
Man City Vs Chelsea

Even if Man City are unable to recover some of their unnamed players from COVID-19 infection, Guardiola’s side are refreshed, a force to be reckoned with at home and need no added incentive to all but extinguish the Blues’ title hopes.

Chelsea ought to be buoyed by two professional performances against Tottenham, but Man City away is a whole different kettle of fish, and we expect fatigue to work against the Blues as the champions extend their lead at the top.
