The Federal Government has announced a $20 million Lagos COVID-19 Action Recovery assistance programme for disadvantaged and disabled households.

The Lagos State government has launched a $20 million “Lagos Cares” programme for youths and women as a stimulus package to help MSMEs cope with the effects of the covid-19 pandemic.

The governor claims that

The project will resolve the loss of jobs and the danger to the food supply chain caused by the pandemic’s spread. The programme, he said, will build on current World Bank operations that are focused on a community-based approach and multi-sector interventions.

For effects, Lagos State will use 10 out of 11 Disbursement-Linked Indicators (DLIs) across three results areas.

The Lagos CARES Programme will support 125,058 individuals, cover 69 markets and a minimum of 2,512 MSMEs will be supported.

A total of 4,652 farmers will benefit from the initiative, which aims to increase agricultural inputs and services.

A total of 5,460 farmers will be involved in agricultural assets for the production of food and the reduction of food waste.

The programme encompasses three key result areas including:

  • Increasing cash transfers and livelihood support to poor and vulnerable households;

  • Increasing food security and safe functioning of food supply chains for poor households, and

  • Facilitating the recovery of Micro and Small Enterprises (MSMEs), while strengthening institutional support for coordination and delivery.

Its execution, according to the Governor, “cuts through related ministries, including SDG&I, Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA), Finance, Wealth Creation, and Agriculture.” Governor of Lagos State, Sanwo-Olu.

Today is a watershed moment in our fight against the COVID-19 Pandemic’s negative effect on our homes, livelihoods, food security, and businesses. The CARES project is an important component of the national strategy to reduce the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and improve people’s well-being.

“The Lagos CARES Program, which will run from 2021 to 2023, will offer economic relief and rehabilitation assistance to designated disadvantaged people. The initiative will actively assist distressed households and indirectly assist 125,058 people over the course of 24 months. In addition, there will be interventions in 69 markets, with a minimum of 2,512 MSMEs receiving assistance.”
